MAPAS has been offering Music and Performing Arts opportunities to the people of our city for 60 years! Today, the service continues to offer lessons for people of all ages who want to learn an instrument or sing.

The MAPAS Centre offers the opportunity to be creative and perform alongside other people through a variety of bands, choirs, orchestras, drama and musical theatre groups. There are a range of groups to suit all abilities and ages. Our single monthly membership fee gives you access to as many groups as you would like to join (provided you meet the entry requirements/age restrictions).

Music and Performing Arts Salford (MAPAS) is Salford’s provider of Performing Arts opportunities.
MAPAS teaches music and performing arts to the people of our city; whether that is in a school setting, as part of a group based at the MAPAS centre, or individual instrument tuition.
MAPAS is not just for kids. You can have individual instrument tuition or join our Community Choir or Salford Steel.
Our single monthly membership fee gives you access to as many groups as you would like to join (provided you meet the entry requirements/age restrictions), and we offer free instrument hire to students in instrument lessons as well as Assisted Purchase schemes for those wishing to buy their own instrument.
You can also learn other music based skills via MAPAS including Music Theory and Music Production*.
*Not offered as a standard course, but one off courses held as and when available.

MAPAS offer tuition in Salford schools but we know that this doesn’t suit everyone. If you are an adult learner or have a child who would prefer to learn outside of a school setting, we offer evening tuition at our MAPAS Centre base, as well as our MAPAS @ Home service for those wishing to learn from the comfort of their own home.
MAPAS Centre is a membership scheme that gives you access to our bands, orchestras, choirs, drama groups and theatre groups. It provides opportunities for children, young people and adults from across Salford to take part in creative activities together.
Most of our sessions take place at Moorside High School in Swinton (M27 0AP) but we run some groups at various other venues throughout the city.
The MAPAS Centre is split into three strands: Music Centre, Singing Centre and Performing Arts Centre. However, you can access all three strands with one MAPAS Centre membership (current membership fee from £10 per month for children).

MAPAS is open to anyone who has a passion for or wants to gain access to the arts!
While our school services are for Salford based schools and all of our sessions take place in Salford, you do not have to be based in Salford yourself to attend, nor do you need to be enrolled in a Salford School to attend children’s groups at the MAPAS centre.

Both our Community Choir (Thursday, 7.30 – 8.45pm, Moorside High) and Salford Steel (Thursday 6.00 – 7.15pm, Co-op Academy Walkden) are both open to members aged 18+, with adult MAPAS Membership costing just £15 per month.
As with a junior membership, you can join both MAPAS adult groups with a single membership.
We also offer MAPAS Movers (Wednesday, and Melody Makers (Wednesday, 5.30 – 6.15pm), for adults with SEND.
While some of our music groups and ensembles have an entry requirement, the vast majority of MAPAS centre groups are open to all (provided they meet certain age criteria.

Yes!
On average, members of our MAPAS centre will be invited to perform in 2-3 performances or showcases per year.
Depending which and how many groups and ensembles you are involved with, some people may get more opportunity to perform. However, there is no pressure for anyone to perform if they do not wish to do so.
MAPAS can also help you pass music, singing, and music theory examinations.
We organise Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) exams. We run practical exam sessions twice a year and, in agreement with the MAPAS tutor and parent/carer, pupils are entered for these exams when they are ready.
We can also help you to arrange music theory examinations. In order to take higher practical grades, you will need to pass Grade 5 Music Theory. Please note that Music Theory assessment at Grades 1 to 5 must be taken online. Candidates can take the exam in any location where they have a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam and internet access.
The majority of MAPAS Centre sessions take place at our MAPAS Centre base at Moorside High School (M27 0AP). However, check the details for each group you wish to join, prior to attending. The MAPAS centre operates out of Moorside High School on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. from 4:30-8:30pm. Each MAPAS group/ensemble has its own rehearsal time and venue (see specific groups for details).
