MAPAS for Schools

As well as our groups, ensembles and tuition offered as part of MAPAS Music Centre, MAPAS are also proud to offer a range of Schools Music Services.

Curriculum Support

Our MAPAS in school services are designed to assist in the delivery of your music curriculum at primary or secondary level.

MAPAS tutors can be booked to teach weekly sessions to different year groups depending on your need. All tutors have their own schemes of work but will work closely with your school to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum to your students.

Whole Class Instrument Tuition (WCIT)

WCIT allows primary school pupils to learn a musical instrument for a year.

WCIT (also known as First Access or Wider Opportunities) enables Key Stage 2 pupils to learn a musical instrument as a whole class for a year under the guidance of a specialist MAPAS tutor.

A wide range of instruments can be used to deliver WCIT. The choice of instrument is arranged in conversation with the school based around your preference and availability.

Taking part in a WCIT project creates further opportunities for your pupils – alongside learning to play their instrument pupils complete their Arts Award Discover; a nationally recognised qualification. All classes are also invited to take part in our summer showcase and perform on the nationally renowned stage at The Lowry theatre.

Instrumental Tuition

MAPAS can offer tuition on any instrument and all tuition is given by an experienced tutor who meets our quality standards.

Our tutors are also available to help you run school ensembles such as choirs, bands and orchestras.

We strive to make music lessons accessible and inclusive – with this in mind we are able to offer the loan of an instrument free of charge for pupils to learn to play.

Instrumental tuition can be charged through school or set up to bill parents directly, removing the administrative burden from your school. To discuss suitable options for instrumental lessons in your school, contact us today!

Singing Support

To that end, we offer advice on the development of singing as part of the curriculum across a range of subjects. Supporting schools to start and develop a choir is also an important part of the work of our team. We have packages with different levels of support to help with setting up a new choir including CPD, resource ideas and team teaching with one of our experienced tutors.

We are able to offer vocal tuition as part of our instrumental tuition package and our MAPAS vocal tutors can also help you with singing assemblies in your school.

MAPAS in Schools Workshops

Our specialist tutors can deliver one-off workshops at your school, focused on a variety of different instruments and topics.

Some of these different themes include African drumming, Samba, Singing, Drama and many more. These can be tailored to work with different Key Stages and can vary in length from half days working with one Key Stage to full days working with the whole school. Please click the link below for examples of workshops that we can run or contact us to develop a workshop that is perfect for you and your school.

Below is a list of one-off workshops that MAPAS can deliver. The costs include delivery from one of our experienced and engaging tutors and all the equipment needed to run the workshop. This is not an exhaustive list and we can create a bespoke design to suit your needs. Workshop length will depend on the number of classes you wish to involve, with prices starting from £60 per hour.

Samba Workshop

Using a variety of traditional samba instruments, every child in the class will be able to take part in this musical extravaganza celebrating all things samba! With uplifting beats that are sure to get your students in a party mood this is the perfect end of term treat! Suitable for all key stages.

African Music Workshop

Incorporating both singing and instrumental music, this workshop is an opening into the diverse world of African music. By the end of the workshop, your pupils will be able to play a traditional African piece of music on a djembe (African drum) and sing a selection of traditional songs. The song resources will also be sent to the classroom teacher so that they can continue to sing in the classroom after the workshop has taken place. Suitable for all key stages.

Drama Workshop

Drama helps to develop language and communication skills. This fun creative workshop will encourage students to build confidence through games and participating in pretend play, contributing to developing vocabulary and encouraging exploration of imagination and emotional understanding. Suitable for all key stages

Raise the Roof – Singing in the Classroom

This inclusive and fun workshop encourages all students to join in singing in the classroom, or can be up-scaled to the school hall to incorporate greater participation. Including a wide selection of fun songs with students singing in unison and in parts, this workshop will help celebrate the singing abilities that your pupils have to offer. A resource pack will also be sent to school for your staff to keep in order to encourage the singing to continue long after we have gone! This workshop can be suited to any Key Stage.

Songwriting Workshop

Suitable for KS2, KS3 or KS4 this workshop teaches the basics of writing your very own song in a genre of your choice. Teaching about structure, inspiration and lyric writing, by the end of the session, each student will have the basis of their own song. This workshop can be suited to musicians and non-musicians so no prior music knowledge is necessarily required – anyone can write a song with MAPAS!

Curriculum link Workshop

From Romans to languages, the environment to Roald Dahl, this workshop will be built around a topic of your choice. Music will be used as the medium to teach children about various aspects of the topic in a creative and memorable way. The workshop price includes planning in collaboration with the class teacher, delivery and resources. Suitable for KS1 or KS2.
